The Story Behind the Reviews

15 years on the pitch. 7 years at Amazon building the very platform most reviewers exploit. One mission: radical honesty in football gear reviews.

From Silicon Valley to the Sunday League Pitch

In 1998, I walked out of Stanford with a Computer Science degree and walked into a tiny startup in Mountain View called Google. I was employee number 37. Over the next six years, I helped build the AdWords Quality Score system — the engine that decided which ads you saw and which you didn't. It taught me everything about how platforms make money from attention.

Then in 2004, I moved to Seattle to join Amazon. For seven years, I led the technical architecture of the Amazon Associates platform — the very same affiliate program that powers most product review sites today. I know exactly how the commission structure works, how tracking cookies fire, and how easy it is to manipulate reviews for profit.

"I built the machine. I know every gear inside it. And that's exactly why I can tell you when someone is using it to deceive you."— Crystal Yifei Liu

Why I Started TopFootballers

After leaving big tech in 2015 and spending a few years advising startups, I kept noticing the same problem: football gear reviews online were overwhelmingly shallow, sponsored, or written by people who had clearly never kicked a ball in their lives. The Amazon affiliate model I helped build was being used to churn out endless "Best Football Boots 2026" lists — copied from spec sheets, optimized for clicks, utterly useless for actual footballers.

I started this site because I was tired of it. I wanted to read a review written by someone who actually plays. Someone who knows what it feels like when your touch fails you on a wet pitch because the upper material soaks up water. Someone who can tell you the difference between a boot that fits and a boot that disappears on your foot.

So I became that person.

Our Testing Standards

Every single product on this site is:

📦 Purchased by me 🏟️ Tested on real pitches ⏱️ 10+ hours minimum per product 📊 Rated with our DP Score system 🚫 Never sponsored 🔄 Re-tested when new versions drop

I don't accept free samples. I don't do "sponsored reviews." If a brand sends me a product, I send it back. The only way a product appears on this site is if I bought it with my own money and tested it on a pitch with my own feet.

When you click a link and buy something, I earn a small commission — at no extra cost to you. That's how this site stays alive. It also means my loyalty is to you, not to any brand. If a boot is bad, I'll tell you it's bad. If there's a better option for less money, I'll tell you that too.
